Finally
I did it.
My long rumoured haircut finally took place around midday today.
For anyone who’s unsure why this is a big deal for me, a conversation with my mum revealed that not only had I had long hair since the age of approximately 11, but also that I was a long-haired toddler too, only getting it cut in order to start school. Basically, my hair has been long for more than two thirds of my life.
What finally pushed me to get it done today? Maybe it was a frustrating morning which saw me enthusiastically arrive at the office an hour before a scheduled meeting (on a public holiday) to find myself locked out with no way of doing anything until somebody arrived (which they finally did about an hour and a half later). Maybe it was slight self-consciousness at being one of three (lovely) gringos at a (rubbish) Peruvian Independence Day concert last night, all rocking the same look of tied-back hair and accompanying beard. But most likely it was the nagging awareness that I’d talked about doing it for months, and the handy window of free time that appeared around midday might not pop up again soon.
Anyway, so far I haven’t felt any ill effects / withdrawal etc (though I’ve kept hold of vanquished the ponytail just in case). Helen’s response has involved regular bouts of staring and occasional disbelief (I don’t think she ever really thought it would happen) but general positivity.
There’s a chance this might mark the start of a revolutionary new phase of my life, but I kinda doubt it. I’m slightly cynical as to the level of effect an image change (even a relatively major one) can have. Saying that, I’m definitely curious to see if people act any differently around me. (For a start, it’d be nice if randoms on the malecon, or any other public place for that matter, stopped pestering me to buy their marijuana.)
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Loving the blog – how long are you going to be out in Peru for? Is there a possibility you’ll still be there next Spring?

Hey Tom, love the new ‘do’. Has Helen taken your ponytail and made it into a necklace as a romantic gesture. If not, then I think she should. Loving the new blog, keep the updates coming.
